London in Poetry and Prose

Edited by Anna Adams

Drawings by Neil Pittaway

First Published in 2003 by Enitharmon Press, 26b Caversham Road London NW5 2DU

ISBN 1 900564 03 3

This anthology is a celebration of the city of London: 'Noisy, stimulating, deadening, filthy, mysterious, tolerant, racist, crime-ridden, saint-haunted, ancient, up-to-the-minute, opressive, liberating, crowded, lonely, addictive, and green-and -gardened, London is a microcosm of the world.' These words, from Anna Adams' foreward, give a taste of the breadth of subject-matter and tone to be enjoyed in this magnificent illustrated antology. Writing from the Middle Ages to the present is divided into themes including 'The Weather in the Streets', 'The Poor and the Rich', 'The Countryman in Town', 'The Recent Wars' and - unavoidably- 'London Transport.'

From the Publisher: The Thames has always fascinated artists and writers. Canaletto, Whistler and Monet's views have not changed much despite the passage of time. Authors from Pope to Dickens, as well as today's Peter Ackroyd, have also been inspired by the river.

This book's eclectic collection of paintings, drawings and prints of the bridges and buildings along the Thames are the choices of twenty contemporary artists, who were commissioned to choose their favourites and illustrate them. The result is dynamic view of the Thames in the twenty-first century.

He has written a number of children's books and edited a series of Anthologies of Poetry for Oxford University Press.
